Rijkswaterstaat warns river flows remain low despite recent rains
Rijkswaterstaat reports that water discharge in the Rhine and Meuse stays well below normal, even after recent rainfall.
According to Rijkswaterstaat, the amount of water moving through the Rhine and Meuse has not improved, despite recent rain showers. The most recent weekly drought monitor indicates that discharge rates for both rivers remain extremely low and are projected to fall further. This situation continues to limit navigable depth, causing longer queues at locks for commercial vessels.
Upstream nations are experiencing below-average precipitation for this time of year, which is expected to keep the Rhine flow at Lobith near 670 m³/s. The authority estimates that restoring normal river levels could take weeks or even months. Groundwater levels have risen slightly but remain low, and the risk of saltwater intrusion in coastal and IJsselmeer regions persists.
