Ring introduces “Throw Away the Key” encryption to curb police data requests

Ring will roll out a new encryption system called TAKE that limits the video data it can hand over to law-enforcement, while still supporting its cloud-based features.

Ring unveiled a new encryption approach named Throw Away the Key Encryption (TAKE), which will be enabled by default on all its cameras beginning in September. TAKE creates unique keys that change every five minutes and are discarded after a day, storing them in an AWS Nitro Enclave that can only be accessed under strict, hardware-enforced controls. According to spokesperson Sam McGee, the method restricts Ring’s ability to supply video content to police, allowing only basic subscriber data and encrypted files in response to lawful process.

While the system preserves cloud-based functions such as smart alerts and AI search, it is not full end-to-end encryption and still requires footage to be processed on Amazon’s servers. Ring also noted that users retain the ability to retrieve older recordings by providing keys through the Ring app, and that no government backdoor is built into the design. Competitors like Reolink and Eufy offer locally-processed alternatives, but Ring argues TAKE balances privacy with the advanced features its customers expect.
