Rising fuel and energy costs threaten to reverse grocery price relief

Higher fuel and diesel prices, driven by attacks on Middle-East energy infrastructure, are set to push grocery prices up again after a brief period of stability.

Energy costs have surged, with the BLS noting a 20.4% increase in headline inflation driven by energy, the sharpest rise since May. Attacks on oil tankers and infrastructure in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Russia have disrupted diesel supplies, pushing gasoline to $4.36 per gallon and diesel to $6.28 per gallon. Grocery retailers are feeling the squeeze: Albertsons cited higher gas and diesel expenses, McCormick expects 7% inflation in its forecasts, and Conagra foresees higher prices through year-end.

Although tariff refunds have allowed Walmart, Costco and others to offer lower prices and Aldi announced $86 million in fresh-food discounts, the ongoing energy volatility could undo recent consumer relief. Shipping costs through the Strait of Hormuz have also spiked after a cargo ship sank on a naval mine, further pressuring supply chains.

Why it matters

Consumers may soon face higher grocery bills as fuel price spikes increase food production and distribution costs.
