Rising living costs push many Czech households to live paycheck to paycheck, survey shows

A new survey finds that an increasing number of Czech families are unable to keep a meaningful portion of their earnings and are relying on each paycheck to meet basic expenses.

According to a recent survey, a growing proportion of Czech households are struggling to retain any substantial part of their earnings, with many seeing their income insufficient to meet basic costs. Analysts attribute the squeeze to rising fuel, housing and energy expenses combined with modest wage growth. The share of families that must stretch each paycheck to cover essentials has risen, and savings reserves are dwindling, particularly among low-income earners and single-person households.

Commentators from Poradna při finanční tísni, XTB and Provident Financial highlighted the impact of higher mortgage rates and rent increases, while Home Credit noted that many low-income families lack even a month’s savings. The survey also included Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Estonia and Latvia, where comparable or more severe financial pressure was observed.

Why it matters

It shows how rising costs are eroding household financial stability across Central Europe.
