Rising Political Rhetoric Spurs Surge in Threats Against Federal Judges
Federal judges say they face a wave of intimidation and security worries after harsh remarks from Donald Trump and his allies, a Brennan Center study finds.
The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University released a study of 35 sitting and retired federal judges that documents a dramatic escalation in threats since Donald Trump returned to office. Judges described measures such as building safe rooms, restricting children’s outdoor activities, and enduring constant security details, with one receiving over 700 threatening calls after an immigration ruling. Incidents range from pizza-doxxing and swatting to hate mail and online noose images, often linked to political commentary targeting the bench.
US Marshals Service data show a 57 % rise in “security incidents of significant concern” for judges in fiscal 2025, while Supreme Court Police anticipate a 38 % increase in threats to justices in 2026. Funding for judicial protection rose modestly to $892 million, but judges warn that resource cuts and reassignment of marshals could worsen vulnerability, raising questions about long-term judicial independence.
