Rising river levels spark flood alerts across Bihar after Nepal rains
Heavy rains in Nepal have pushed several Bihar rivers above danger thresholds, prompting evacuations and heightened monitoring.
Persistent rainfall in Nepal, following an ice-rock landslide-induced flash flood, has led to a surge in water levels of multiple rivers flowing into Bihar. The Water Resources Department confirmed that the Gandak river crossed its danger line in Gopalganj, while the Valmikinagar barrage discharged about 99,800 cusecs at 8 pm on Saturday. The Kosi and Burhi Gandak rivers reached critical levels in Khagaria, Katihar and Kursela, and the Ganga ran above the danger mark at Hathidah, Gandhighat and Kahlgaon.
Officials have relocated people from flood-prone areas and ordered district magistrates to supervise conditions personally. Flood Control Department engineers are stationed at key points in Bhagalpur, Purnea, Katihar, West Champaran and other districts to respond to any escalation.
