By late August, more than 90 large wildfires were active, with crews in the Southwest and Texas confronting daytime highs over 100°F. Wildland firefighters endure heat from the environment, the fire itself, and their own exertion, often reaching core temperatures of 100°F and physiological strain indices above six on a ten-point scale.
Hydration alone cannot always prevent overheating, and symptoms can rapidly evolve from fatigue to heat stroke or rhabdomyolysis, with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health documenting dozens of severe cases. Extended 13.8-hour shifts and under six hours of sleep impair decision-making, while repeated exposure to smoke raises estimated lifetime risks of lung cancer by up to 43% and cardiovascular disease by up to 30%.
Emerging research also links mid-season fire incidents to temporary declines in kidney function. Experts suggest better staffing, adequate recovery time, health monitoring, and public fire-prevention measures to protect firefighters’ wellbeing.
