Rising Use of Buy-Now-Pay-Later Loans for Rent and Essentials Raises Debt Concerns

Consumers are increasingly turning to BNPL financing to cover rent, groceries and other basic costs, prompting warnings from advocates about hidden fees and debt risk.

Buy-now-pay-later schemes, once promoted for electronics and clothing, have become a common source of cash for Americans facing high living costs, covering rent, groceries, electricity and health expenses. Surveys by Protect Borrowers and LendingTree reveal a sizable share of users depend on these short-term, interest-free installments, with 54% saying they could not make ends meet without them. Advocates such as Ariel Nelson of the National Consumer Law Center warn that lenders often hide fees, membership costs and potential overdraft penalties, turning a seemingly cheap option into a financial hazard.

Companies like Affirm and Flex have launched rent-splitting pilots that charge monthly memberships or per-transaction fees, arguing they provide flexibility for timing mismatches. Nonetheless, critics argue the easy access and automatic withdrawals can quickly deplete accounts and lead to additional charges, underscoring the growing debt vulnerability among low-income households.
