Risk of massive ice break-off threatens Swiss Alpine village of Randa

Experts warn that a hanging glacier on the east side of Weisshorn could shed a large ice mass onto the town of Randa, prompting safety restrictions.

Scientists monitoring the Weisshorn's eastern hanging glacier have identified a significant risk that a sizable ice block could break away and fall onto the mountain settlement of Randa in Valais. Recent observations show the ice mass advancing up to 20 centimeters per day toward the valley, a rate that could be amplified by autumn snowfall, potentially generating a massive snow-ice avalanche. Local authorities have upgraded their alert system to level three, barred entry to the high-risk zone and shut down hiking and cycling routes, though the residential area of Randa is not included in the evacuation zone.

Experts note that the most severe outcome would require both the ice break-off and extreme avalanche conditions to occur simultaneously, a combination they deem relatively improbable. Continuous analysis is underway, but precise timing or size of any future detachment cannot yet be forecasted.

Why it matters

A potential ice-avalanche could endanger lives and disrupt tourism in a popular Alpine region.
