River cargo traffic to Constanța port halted at Danube km 280, operators demand urgent action
Freight vessels bound for the Port of Constanța are stuck near kilometer 280 of the Danube after an oversized ship damaged the navigation channel, prompting port operators to call for immediate government intervention.
Cargo traffic destined for the Port of Constanța and nearby terminals in Midia and Mangalia has been suspended near kilometer 280 of the Danube after an oversized river vessel damaged the channel’s bed. The Constanța Port Business Association (CPBA), representing the majority of economic actors in these ports, has formally requested that the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Administrația Fluvială a Dunării de Jos (AFDJ) in Galaţi undertake immediate dredging to restore navigability.
The association stresses that the blockage is causing delays, extra fees such as demurrage, and broader disruptions to the regional supply chain. It also highlights the impact on Ukrainian grain shipments, a key export routed through Constanța, and warns that prolonged obstruction could undermine the port’s competitiveness and Romania’s role as a logistics hub. CPBA is seeking a clear timetable for remedial actions to inform affected operators.
Why it matters
The Danube blockage threatens costly delays for regional trade and hampers grain exports critical to global food supplies.
