Rivian recalls R2 SUVs over under-torqued battery pack fasteners
Rivian has announced a recall of its R2 sport-utility vehicle after discovering that some high-voltage battery pack bolts may not have been tightened properly, potentially causing power loss while driving.
Rivian issued a recall for its newly launched R2 SUV after finding that fasteners securing the high-voltage battery pack may have been under-torqued, which could lead to a loss of power while the vehicle is in motion. The company estimates that about 14 vehicles are involved and will either repair the bolts or replace the affected parts. The flaw was first spotted on September 17 by a manufacturing operator at the Normal, Illinois factory, leading to an adjustment of the automated torque station to reject improperly tightened fasteners.
Rivian told regulators it has not received any reports of accidents, injuries or deaths related to the issue. This recall follows a prior R2 recall for a backup-camera visibility problem that was resolved with a software update. The R2 is Rivian’s first mass-market electric SUV and a key element of its strategy to achieve profitability, with a target of delivering 20,000-25,000 units by year-end.
Why it matters
The recall highlights quality-control challenges for Rivian as it ramps up production of its crucial mass-market EV.
