Riyadh Forum Pushes Global AI Governance as Tech Outpaces Regulation
Leaders gathered in Riyadh for the fourth Global Forum on AI Ethics to turn UNESCO's recommendations into actionable rules amid rapid AI advances.
In Riyadh, the fourth Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence convened ministers, researchers and industry officials to address the widening gap between AI development and regulatory capacity. Co-organized by UNESCO, Saudi Arabia and the International Center for AI Research and Ethics, the event marks the first time an Arab nation has hosted the gathering. Delegates examined how to translate UNESCO's 193-member recommendation into enforceable standards covering supervision, gender equality, health and energy consumption.
UNESCO's Deputy Director-General Asa Regner highlighted the unprecedented speed of AI progress. The forum also introduced RAM 2.0, an updated readiness assessment, and an environmental toolkit for measuring AI's ecological footprint. Dr. Abdullah bin Sharaf Alghamdi called for joint action among governments, researchers and civil society to create inclusive, accountable AI governance.
