RM1,000 driver subsidies to be rolled out across all Malaysian states
Transport minister Loke announced that RM1,000 vouchers for taxi, rental car and school-bus drivers will be distributed nationwide, not just in Melaka.
During a ceremony in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, transport minister Loke confirmed that the RM1,000 vouchers for taxi, rental-car and school-bus drivers are a nationwide scheme, countering claims that the aid is limited to Melaka. The program, first referenced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim while tabling the 2027 budget, will be available to any driver with a valid Land Public Transport Agency card, with an estimated 12,000 beneficiaries.
Loke handed out 283 vouchers at the event and noted that he has visited Negeri Sembilan and will travel to Kedah to ensure coverage. Opposition figure Lee Chean Chung, leader of Bersama, urged the Election Commission and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the announcement, suggesting it blurs the line between government resources and party politics ahead of the November 14 election. He also criticized the use of a Pakatan Harapan rally rather than official transport ministry channels for the disclosure.
Why it matters
The subsidy affects thousands of drivers and raises questions about election-one outlet use of public funds.
