RM15 billion grid upgrade aims to boost power capacity and support digital growth
Tenaga Nasional Bhd says the RM15 billion allocation in Budget 2027 will modernise Malaysia’s national grid, expanding capacity for rising demand and data-centre needs.
Budget 2027 earmarks RM15 billion for strengthening Malaysia’s national electricity grid, a component of Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s broader RM43 billion investment programme for 2025-2027. The upgrades aim to raise system capacity to meet growing demand and to underpin the digital economy, especially large data-centre projects that require reliable power. TNB highlighted schemes such as the Green Lane Pathway, the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme and the Green Electricity Tariff to give businesses renewable options.
For households, the electricity bill protection threshold has been lifted from 600 to 800 kWh per month until the end of the year, covering about 90 percent of domestic users. The utility also supports solar-powered streetlights, rooftop solar at welfare homes and places of worship, and faster rollout of electricity to rural and indigenous communities. Moreover, TNB pledged to channel over RM11 billion through the Bumiputera Vendor Development Programme 3.0 to boost local participation in renewable and grid projects, aligning with the national net-zero target and the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.
Why it matters
The investment will improve power reliability, support Malaysia's digital expansion, and advance renewable energy goals.
