RN deputy threatens to end state funding for CGT if far-right wins 2027 election
New RN parliamentary leader Sébastien Chenu said the CGT should lose public subsidies, arguing that state money must support only apolitical activities.
Sébastien Chenu, newly named leader of the RN group in the French National Assembly, announced on France Inter that the state should withdraw financial support from the CGT, insisting that public money must back only non-political initiatives. He argued that unions engaging in political campaigning misuse taxpayer funds. The RN’s stance follows Marine Le Pen’s recent claim that only apolitical bodies deserve subsidies, targeting left-wing groups.
CGT secretary-general Sophie Binet, who participated in a protest against the RN’s Orléans congress, defended the union’s activism for workers facing rising living costs. Chenu warned that a future RN victory in the 2027 presidential election would see the CGT’s funding cut, forcing it to rely exclusively on member contributions. On CNews, RN deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy criticized Binet’s rhetoric as aligned with Jean-Luc Mélenchon and questioned her understanding of work, noting she has never held a job.
Why it matters
The proposal could reshape public funding for unions and influence the political climate ahead of the 2027 election.
