Road injuries rank among India's top ten causes of death, WHO data shows
According to the WHO Global Health Estimates, road traffic injuries were the tenth leading cause of death for both men and women in India in 2023.
The World Health Organization reported that road traffic injuries placed tenth on the list of mortality causes for Indian males and females in 2023. In the same year, road fatalities accounted for about 14% of the global total, with India recording 1.74 lakh deaths. For men, road injuries were the eighth biggest killer, while falls held that position for women. Overall, falls ranked ninth in the country’s mortality hierarchy.
