Roblox founders donate $20 million to launch metabolic psychiatry center in Massachusetts
David Baszucki and Jan Ellison Baszucki have pledged a $20 million grant to McLean Hospital to create a center studying diet-based treatments for severe mental illness.
Roblox co-founders David Baszucki and Jan Ellison Baszucki announced a $20 million donation via their family foundation, Baszucki Group, to establish the McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry at McLean Hospital in Massachusetts. The center will focus on research into metabolic and dietary interventions, including ketogenic diets, as potential treatments for severe psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia.
McLean Hospital, a member of the Mass General Brigham network and a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, will serve as the flagship site for the newly formed Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry (MetPsy). Additional funding will back clinical education and physician-training initiatives coordinated with MH², a clinical practice and training hub. The Baszucki family’s commitment stems from their son Matthew’s positive response to metabolic therapy, which they hope will spur a worldwide movement to expand evidence-based metabolic treatments. The initiative aims to translate emerging scientific findings into standardized clinical protocols and broaden access to these therapies.
Why it matters
The grant could accelerate evidence-based dietary treatments for mental illness, potentially improving outcomes for millions worldwide.
