Robotic combat league showcases human-piloted fighters in Kuala Lumpur arena

Shadow Combat League staged a three-hour robot-fighting event in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, letting participants control humanoid bots via VR and motion capture.

At Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Shadow Combat League presented a three-hour robot combat exhibition called New Dawn Malaysia, where humans piloted humanoid fighters through VR headsets and motion-capture suits. Founder Ian Tan, a former medical doctor, and entrepreneur Ooi Fei Hoong, with backgrounds in gaming and sport, aim to use the spectacle to spark a Malaysian robotics ecosystem. The league records every movement, feeding the data to AI systems to improve machine responsiveness while keeping participants safe.

Organizers stress that the excitement comes from the human pilots’ decisions, not pre-programmed scripts, and suggest the technology could later serve as training tools for athletes like badminton champion Lee Chong Wei. Their broader ambition is to make robots a familiar part of everyday life, from entertainment to service applications.

Why it matters

The event demonstrates a new way to blend sport, entertainment and robotics, potentially shaping future tech adoption in Malaysia.
