Robotic mule trials in the Mojave show promise and practical hurdles for Army logistics

During a large-scale exercise at Fort Irwin, soldiers tested the NOMAD uncrewed ground vehicle for supply runs, noting both safety benefits and performance limits in desert conditions.

In the rocky stretches of the Mojave Desert, the US Army incorporated the NOMAD uncrewed ground vehicle into the Project Convergence Capstone exercise at Fort Irwin, where nearly 10,000 soldiers evaluated emerging technologies. Manufactured by Hendrick Technical Solutions, the robot handled resupply missions and could potentially support medical evacuations. Soldiers reported that the system, controlled from a single tablet, cut exposure to hostile fire and could be loaded with cargo in under five minutes.

However, extreme desert heat caused the tablet screen to shut down, prompting improvised cooling tricks, and the robot's operational radius dropped from about 600 meters to roughly 200 meters on steep ridges. The platform also lacks a self-return capability, forcing crews to retrieve it manually if communication fails. Repeated deployments stressed the trailer’s ramps, leading to a flip incident that, while not damaging the robot, highlighted durability issues. Feedback from the field will inform future refinements as the Army seeks reliable ground-based logistics solutions.
