Robotic startup Planted secures $31.8 million from Google, Bill Gates-backed fund to speed solar farms

Planted, a California startup building robot-assembled solar farms, raised $31.8 million from investors including Google and a Bill Gates-linked fund.

California-based Planted, which automates solar-farm construction with field robots and digital-twin planning, announced a $31.8 million financing round. Investors include Google, Breakthrough Energy Ventures (a Bill Gates initiative), Khosla Ventures, Gigascale Capital and others, with Piva Capital and RA Capital Management Planetary Health as lead backers. The capital will fund expansion of the robot fleet and the rollout of a new Sage robot in 2026, aiming to boost annual deployment capacity from 10 MW to 100 MW.

Planted’s system replaces traditional rack-and-track layouts with individual panel posts that follow natural topography, allowing higher panel density, reduced land disturbance and faster permitting. The company cites a 28 MW project completed in ten months, with field construction under three months, and smaller installations in Illinois and a pending Armoracia project. By cutting labor, steel and land bottlenecks, Planted hopes to accelerate utility-scale solar growth as the U.S. adds record solar and storage capacity.

Why it matters

Faster, cheaper solar farms could speed the transition to clean energy and reduce land impacts.
