Rock Critic and Springsteen Biographer Dave Marsh Dies at 76
Dave Marsh, noted music journalist and author of the 1979 Bruce Springsteen biography “Born to Run,” passed away at his home in Connecticut at age 76.
Renowned music critic Dave Marsh died on Friday in his Connecticut residence at the age of 76. Marsh authored the influential 1979 biography “Born to Run,” chronicling Bruce Springsteen’s rise from a New Jersey act to an international star, and later produced several other books on iconic rock groups. His career included editorial work at Creem, frequent pieces for one outlet, and the co-creation of SiriusXM’s “E Street Radio” alongside a nearly 20-year run hosting “Kick Out the Jams.”
The news of his passing was shared by Jim Rotolo, host of the Springsteen-focused SiriusXM show “The Wild & The Innocent.” Marsh’s personal tragedy—losing his daughter Kristen Ann Carr to sarcoma in 1993—led him to establish a charitable fund supporting families and research for the disease. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara Carr.
Why it matters
Marsh shaped rock journalism and preserved the legacy of major music icons for generations.
