Rocket Lab unveils portable GHOST system to boost launch flexibility
Rocket Lab announced a mobile launch platform called GHOST that will let its Electron rockets fly from more sites, including Alaska.
Rocket Lab revealed a new portable spaceport solution named GHOST, short for Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology, intended to make its Electron and HASTE rockets deployable from virtually any location. The system will enable more frequent and flexible launches, targeting multi-launch campaigns and critical security tasks. Currently operating from a site on New Zealand's North Island and Wallops Island in Virginia, the company plans to add the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Alaska to its roster.
The initiative was sparked by a HASTE client’s desire for a more mobile launch provider. Rocket Lab’s founder and chief executive Peter Beck highlighted that the technology will broaden the company’s launch footprint and responsiveness.
Why it matters
Mobile launch capability could lower costs and speed up access to space for satellites and defense missions.
