Roku launches Roku Labs, letting users test experimental apps and open-source its remote OS

Roku unveiled a new program called Roku Labs, accessible through a dedicated tile on every Roku device, allowing users to experiment with four beta applications—Backdrops Studio for custom backgrounds, Roku Immerse for personalized screensavers, Roku Weather, and Roku Stocks. Participants can give direct feedback that will influence the apps' evolution. Alongside this, Roku announced that the operating system powering its remotes and smart-home products, Roku LT OS, will be released as open-source software, with a free development kit and a video training series for developers.

The company also plans to update the home screen layout for users in Mexico and Brazil, add voice-triggered weather forecasts, and enhance the search experience with explanatory content. These moves aim to deepen user engagement and foster a community of third-party developers around the Roku platform.
