After ceding large regions, Romania shifted to a National Legionary State, appointing General Ion Antonescu as prime minister with sweeping authority and Horia Sima, head of the Legionary Movement, as deputy prime minister. The government, lasting 138 days, was characterized by authoritarian control, ideological emphasis on legionary doctrine, and widespread repression. Tensions between Antonescu and the Legionaries escalated, culminating in the January 1941 Legionary Rebellion.
The uprising resulted in the expulsion of legionary officials from power and solidified Antonescu’s sole leadership, which continued under German support. This period remains a dark chapter in Romanian history, reflecting the volatility of wartime politics.
