Romania faces high homeownership yet widespread household overcrowding, summit planned for affordable housing

Eurostat statistics reveal that homeownership in Romania is among the highest in the European Union, with roughly 94% of the population residing in privately owned housing. Conversely, a sizable share of Romanian households are considered overcrowded, a disparity that FIDES says reflects a complex housing challenge. The organization also noted that around a quarter of Romanian dwellings were vacant according to the 2021 census.

To address these issues, FIDES and the Confederation of Employers Concordia will host the Romania Affordable Housing Summit 2026 on 5 October in Bucharest, bringing together EU officials, national authorities, private sector actors and financiers. The summit will focus on financing mechanisms, expanding housing supply and fostering long-term public-private partnerships to improve housing affordability across the country.
