Romania greenlights final phase of Cornetu-Avrig hydro project on Olt River
The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests granted an environmental permit to finish the remaining works of the Cornetu-Avrig hydroelectric scheme on the Olt River in Sibiu and Vâlcea counties.
Romania's Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests issued environmental approval for the final works of the Cornetu-Avrig hydroelectric complex on the Olt River, spanning Sibiu and Vâlcea counties. The decision sets out protection measures for the construction period and the plant's operational life, reflecting findings from impact, adequacy and water-body studies. Minister Diana Buzoianu stated that the project strengthens national energy security without compromising environmental legislation.
The permit enables completion of the Câineni and Lotrioara sections and upgrades at Racoviţa to meet design parameters, while also safeguarding railway bridges and the DN7 road corridor. Additional safeguards address the historic Turnul Spart monument, as required by the Ministry of Culture. Public consultation meetings in Câineni and Boiţa yielded four sets of observations from three individuals and one legal entity.
