Romania may seek postponement of EU 2030 air-quality limits, says 2Celsius
The environmental NGO Asociația 2Celsius warns that Romania could ask the EU to defer the 2030 air-quality standards and urges clear rules for any extensions.
Asociația 2Celsius cautions that Romania may request an extension of the 2030 EU air-quality limits and is urging the European Commission to adopt strict, verifiable rules for any such postponements. The NGO points to a recent EU Court of Justice ruling on PM10 violations in Bucharest as evidence of the country’s challenges. It has forwarded five detailed proposals, including expanding pollution modelling to high-exposure neighborhoods, validating models against reference-year measurements, and requiring public justification for any omitted mitigation measures. Additional recommendations call for intermediate targets, cost-benefit analyses that factor health impacts, and open-access publication of projections and citizen consultations. 2Celsius asks the Romanian Ministry of Environment and other agencies to publicly endorse these proposals and to broaden official monitoring networks, while also incorporating data from independent sensor projects like LuftDaten and AerLive.
Why it matters
Delaying EU air-quality limits could affect public health and climate goals across Romania and the EU.
