Romania receives previously suspended PNRR funds, minister stresses real reform implementation

Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare announced that Romania has obtained PNRR payments that were earlier suspended by the European Commission, emphasizing that formal adoption of reforms is not enough without effective implementation.

Romania has secured a new payment from the EU Recovery and Resilience Programme after the European Commission lifted a suspension on the request. Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said the disbursement reflects institutional effort and dialogue with the Commission to meet Romania's commitments. He warned that simply checking off reforms on paper does not guarantee payment; the real test is the extent to which reforms are put into practice and generate economic benefits.

Nazare urged a detailed review of completed projects, their economic impact, and remaining financial obligations to inform the 2027 budget planning. The Ministry of Finance has asked the Ministry of Investments and European Projects and credit authorities to consolidate data for a transparent picture of the programme’s financial status. The minister stressed that the success of the PNRR should be measured by tangible reforms and investments that boost productivity and public service efficiency.

Why it matters

It shows how EU funds are tied to actual policy outcomes, affecting Romania's fiscal planning and reform agenda.
