Romania's AI ambitions hinge on rapid electricity grid upgrades

Romania aims to become a regional AI and supercomputing hub, yet the pace of electricity-grid modernization may limit the rollout of large data-center projects.

Romania has attracted interest to host AI and supercomputing facilities, backed by a sizable pool of ICT professionals and a software sector valued in the billions. Projects like the AI Zone, driven by Accelerated Infrastructure Capital and ClusterPower, and the Black Sea AI Gigafactory are slated to consume up to 800 MW each, far exceeding the roughly 100 MW already installed in private data centers. The national grid faces a projected deficit of about 1,600 MW at peak load, requiring new transmission infrastructure, transformer stations, and reliable energy storage.

While Romania benefits from a diversified energy mix of hydro, nuclear, wind and solar, the speed of grid upgrades will be decisive for investors. Failure to connect these projects on time could divert capital to neighboring markets, leaving the country with hardware but little added economic value.
