Romania's average pension rises modestly while pensioner numbers fall
The National Institute of Statistics reported a slight increase in the average monthly pension and a drop of about 7,000 pensioners in the second quarter of 2026.
Data released by the Institutul Național de Statistică show that the average monthly pension in Romania climbed to 2,821 lei, marking a 0.04% rise over the first quarter of 2026. The overall pensioner count declined to 4.913 million, a reduction of about 7,000 people, and state pension beneficiaries fell to 4.573 million, down 4,000 from the previous quarter. The average state pension varies sharply by county, with Bucharest leading at 3,579 lei, followed by Hunedoara, Brașov, Gorj and Galați, while Botoșani, Vrancea and Vaslui record the lowest levels.
Women constitute 55% of age-limit pensioners, roughly 2.174 million, but their average pension is only 63% of that received by men. The INS also highlighted that most pensions are age-limit benefits, with smaller shares for survivors and disability payments.
