In the first eight months of 2026, Romania experienced a 10.6% reduction in new passenger-car registrations, making it the sole EU country with a decline. Meanwhile, EU-wide registrations grew, with electric vehicles accounting for 21.7% of the market and hybrids 17.6%. France, Germany, Spain and Italy all posted double-digit percentage gains. The VW Group led European sales with over 2.3 million units, a modest 0.9% rise, followed by Stellantis, up 4.7%, and Renault, down 3.3% (including Dacia's 9.7% fall). Ford saw its registrations drop 14.4% compared with the same period in 2025.
