Romania showcases its first domestically built jet airliner in historic flight
Romania conducted the inaugural demonstration flight of the ROMBAC 1-11, the nation’s first jet-powered passenger aircraft built domestically.
The ROMBAC 1-11, the first jet passenger plane constructed in Romania, was unveiled with a demonstration flight from Băneasa Airport. Built by Întreprinderea de Avioane București using a license from the British BAC 1-11 program, the aircraft featured two Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines and a capacity of 119 seats. The flight was attended by officials and workers from the aircraft factory, underscoring the achievement of the national aeronautical industry and its partnership with British Aerospace.
The jet was designed for a cruising speed of about 870 km/h and a range of roughly 3,500 km. Plans called for commercial operations to start shortly thereafter on a Bucharest-Timișoara route, with later expansion to international services.
