Romania submits Cannes Palme d'Or winner Fjord as Oscar International Feature hopeful

Romania announced that Cristian Mungiu’s film Fjord will be its contender for the Best International Feature award at the upcoming 99th Academy Awards. The story follows two strict parents, played by Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan, who relocate from Romania to a small Norwegian community and are later charged with child abuse, prompting a courtroom battle over their beliefs. The multilingual picture, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, has been picked up for Romanian release by Neon.

Mungiu, whose 2007 debut 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days also won Cannes, hopes the Palme d’Or prestige and the film’s topical themes will earn him a first Oscar nomination. Romania’s previous Oscar entries include Beyond the Hills, which made the shortlist, and the documentary Collective, the only Romanian film ever nominated. The Academy will reveal the shortlist on Dec. 15, with nominees announced on Jan. 21, 2027, and the ceremony slated for March 14, 2027.
