Romania taps international and domestic markets for €1.9bn and RON 9.4bn in private placements
The Treasury secured €1.9 billion on foreign markets and RON 9.4 billion domestically through private placements, using them as emergency funding amid market turbulence and a political crisis.
Romania’s Treasury raised €1.9 billion on international markets through six private-placement transactions and RON 9.4 billion on the domestic market via eight deals.ro. These placements have acted as an emergency financing tool amid global market turbulence tied to the US-Iran conflict and the ongoing war, as well as a prolonged political crisis following the collapse of the pro-European coalition.
The crisis deepened after the Social Democratic Party joined AUR to table and pass a motion of no confidence that dismissed the Ilie Bolojan government. The most recent domestic placements were executed at the end of July, reflecting a shift toward greater reliance on the local market. Treasury head Ștefan Nanu indicated at a London conference that the Ministry of Finance will likely cut its planned foreign-market borrowing for the year and will postpone any new Eurobond issuance until a stable government is formed.
Why it matters
The story shows how political instability forces Romania to depend on costly emergency financing instead of regular Eurobond markets.
