On October 14, Romania will receive a C-130H Hercules transport plane from the United States, with a formal transfer ceremony at the 90th Airlift Base in Otopeni. The aircraft is supplied at no cost via the Excess Defense Articles program, which allows allied nations to acquire surplus U.S. military hardware. Defense minister Radu Miruță and U.S. ambassador Darryl Nirenberg are expected to be present at the event.
This delivery is the eighth Hercules model added to Romania’s air fleet since the first C-130B arrived in 1996 under the same arrangement. The C-130H can perform airlift, medical evacuation, humanitarian aid, and disaster-relief missions, reinforcing Romania’s operational readiness. Officials say the transfer underscores nearly three decades of strategic partnership between the two countries.
Why it matters
The donation boosts Romania's air-lift capacity and highlights ongoing U.S.-Romania defense cooperation.
