Romania to receive EU vaccine supplies for ovine and caprine diseases

Romania will get EU-provided vaccines to combat ovine-caprine pox and peste des petits ruminants, with the shipment slated for late October.

Romania is set to receive a consignment of vaccines from the European Union to fight two contagious livestock diseases: ovine-caprine pox and peste des petits ruminants. After Romania’s formal request on 21 September and the submission of its vaccination strategy on 23 September, the European Commission asked for additional information, which was provided on 5 October. Following this review, the Commission activated the EU vaccine banks on 8 October and arranged for the shipment to arrive on 24 October.

The supplied doses are meant to kick-start an emergency vaccination effort, with further supplies to be arranged as needed. The plan includes targeted vaccination in Constanța and Tulcea for peste des petits ruminants, while ovine-caprine pox vaccination will be coordinated nationally. The initiative also aims to facilitate the resumption of live-animal exports by meeting EU health-security requirements.
