Romania unveils decade-long defence modernisation plan approved by CSAT

Romania's Ministry of National Defence explained the latest Armament Acquisition Plan, which received approval from the Supreme Council of National Defence. The 10-year roadmap, refreshed each year, outlines current procurement programmes and sets priorities for the 2027-2030 period, driven by NATO obligations and the regional security environment. The plan follows national defence laws governing multi-annual armament programmes and budgeting.
Financing will rely on increased defence spending and loans from the EU's SAFE instrument, with a majority of the 22 SAFE projects already signed. Ongoing projects include PATRIOT air-defence, Piranha 5 vehicles, HIMARS, F-35 fighters, 155 mm howitzers and main battle tanks. Future acquisitions target naval, cyber, electronic-warfare and logistics capabilities, as well as joint drone production for Ukraine.
