Romanian and Czech presidents pledge stronger energy ties and storage upgrades

In Prague, Romanian President Nicuşor Dan and Czech President Petr Pavel held talks focused on the European energy market and the importance of expanding cross-border interconnections. Dan announced that Romania expects to achieve notable improvements in energy storage over the coming year and a half, pointing to Black Sea gas supplies as a contributing element. He also called for EU assistance to develop the necessary infrastructure for a single European energy market.

Pavel described Czech Republic’s shift away from Russian gas, relying on terminals in Germany, the Netherlands and Italy, and welcomed more detailed consultations on market integration. The presidents highlighted shared positions on balancing environmental goals with energy security, including the role of nuclear power. Both leaders agreed that greater attention to the European energy agenda is essential for price convergence across member states.
