Romanian and Spanish defence ministers meet to boost NATO cooperation in Black Sea region

During a formal visit to the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, Romania's defence minister Radu Miruță and chief of staff General Gheorghiță Vlad held talks with Spain's defence minister Margarita Robles and defence chief Teodoro López Calderón. The dialogue focused on the state of bilateral relations, the volatile security environment in the Black Sea region, and avenues for deeper NATO and EU collaboration. Romania expressed gratitude for Spain's contributions to regional security, citing the recent interception of a drone on 16 August.

Both ministries reiterated their commitment to supporting Ukraine via the EU Military Assistance Mission and other European defence tools. Discussions also covered joint participation in EU security operations across the Balkans, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as initiatives to enhance maritime safety and integrate Moldova into relevant European frameworks. The ministers concluded by agreeing to maintain and expand political-military dialogue to strengthen national and Euro-Atlantic resilience.
