Romanian construction magnate Florian Mihăiță faces organized crime, tax evasion and money-laundering charges

DIICOT prosecutors raided multiple homes and seized assets in a probe that accuses businessman Florian Mihăiță of leading an organized crime group involved in tax evasion and money laundering.

Prosecutors from DIICOT carried out at least 48 home searches in Iași, Giurgiu, Prahova, Maramureș, Dâmbovița, Ilfov and Bucharest on 15 and 16 October 2026, targeting a criminal group accused of organized crime, continuous tax evasion, embezzlement, fraudulent credit use and money laundering. The investigation centres on construction entrepreneur Florian Mihăiță, whose firms are tied to the Greenfield Băneasa residential project.

Authorities allege that Mihăiță, with the assistance of Bucharest accountant Eliza-Crina Lalu and other intermediaries, operated a complex scheme that generated fictitious commercial transactions to illegally reclaim VAT and reduce tax liabilities. The operation allegedly harmed both the state budget and private companies, prompting the seizure of several luxury vehicles. Mihăiță, Lalu and Ștefan Stoica remain under judicial control as the case proceeds.

Why it matters

The case highlights large-scale financial fraud in Romania's construction sector and the state's effort to combat organized crime.
