Romanian couple in critical condition after gas explosion devastates Bergamo apartment block

A massive explosion destroyed an apartment block in Bergamo after investigators discovered a broken gas conduit in the unit occupied by a Romanian couple. Italian prosecutors are probing the incident as either a negligent accident or a deliberate act. The wife is in critical condition at the severe-burns unit of Niguarda Hospital in Milan, with burns covering roughly 90% of her skin, while her husband remains in intensive care in Verona with injuries affecting half his body.
Emergency responders also treated a 62-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man at Seriate Hospital, and transported a 30-year-old man to Papa Ioan XXIII Hospital. Two elderly women, aged 57 and 99, were taken to Gavazzeni Hospital with minor injuries, and two men, aged 74 and 57, required no hospital transport. Authorities are interviewing the couple's employer and family doctor as part of the investigation.
