Romanian court to decide Călin Georgescu's home detention amid new fraud and symbol charges
Bucharest's Court of Appeal will rule on whether former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu stays under house arrest as prosecutors add two new criminal cases.
On Friday, the Curtea de Apel București will hear DIICOT prosecutors’ challenge to the tribunal’s decision that placed former presidential hopeful Călin Georgescu under house arrest after earlier judicial control. Judges will decide whether to maintain the lower court’s order or to accept the prosecutors’ request for continued detention in a serious fraud case. At the same time, a second file accuses Georgescu of publicly using legionary symbols following a reported salute in Buftea.
A related investigation links him to alleged illegal operations targeting DIICOT’s surveillance devices, with 35-year-old Vlad Alin Zamfir alleged to have scanned Georgescu’s home in Mogoșoaia at the candidate’s request. The appeal’s outcome will be definitive and immediately enforceable.
Why it matters
The verdict will determine Georgescu's liberty and influence how Romanian courts treat high-profile political figures facing serious criminal allegations.
