Romanian Defence Ministry signs contract for four mobile radar systems with Thales partnership

The Ministry of National Defence has signed a contract to acquire four mobile radar systems for aircraft approach and landing, in partnership with Thales Romania and Thales Las France.

Romania's Ministry of National Defence, through its General Directorate for Armaments, finalized a contract for four mobile radar systems that will support aircraft approach and landing operations. The procurement is a joint effort with Thales Romania SRL and Thales Las France SAS, aiming to modernise the Romanian Air Force's air traffic control capabilities. These radars are capable of identifying and tracking aircraft, providing guidance in challenging weather and hostile electromagnetic environments, and transmitting information to national and NATO command structures.

Their mobile design permits use at alternative locations, reducing reliance on fixed base infrastructure and boosting operational flexibility. The contract underscores the broader Romanian-French defence industrial collaboration, with Romanian specialists expected to assist in installation, integration, and long-term maintenance, fostering local high-skill jobs and technology transfer. Overall, the acquisition forms part of Romania's wider programme to upgrade its air force and meet alliance commitments.
