Romanian Defence Ministry warns of Facebook posts misusing army chief's past remarks

The Ministry of National Defence says Facebook posts are recycling General Gheorghiță Vlad’s earlier comments and framing them as fresh security warnings.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defence has highlighted a coordinated disinformation effort on Facebook that reuses statements made by General Gheorghiță Vlad in earlier interviews and public appearances. These messages are combined with alarming headlines and photos of the army chief, creating a false impression of fresh national-security warnings. Examples include a post on a news page that linked to an article from January 2026 and another that directed users to an ad-laden website lacking substantive content.

The ministry emphasized that General Vlad has not issued any recent “national alert” and that the circulated material does not reflect any official warning. Officials advise citizens to check the timing and context of quoted statements and to rely on official defence channels for accurate information. The scheme appears designed to drive traffic to advertising-supported sites.

Why it matters

Misleading posts can stir public anxiety and profit from ad revenue, so checking official sources is crucial.
