Romanian farmer groups urge finance ministry to fund maximum EU fertilizer aid
Agricultural organisations have asked the Ministry of Finance to increase the budget of the Ministry of Agriculture so that Romania can grant the full 200% EU-allowed supplement for fertilizer price hikes.
A coalition of farmer organisations, including Pro Agro, LAPAR and others, sent a formal appeal to the Ministry of Finance requesting a budget increase for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Their aim is to raise the national supplement for fertilizer price compensation to the maximum 200% permitted by EU Regulation 2026/1894, as one outlet proposal covers only 100% of the EU allocation. The petition outlines two financing options: a direct budgetary revision for 2026 or drawing from the government’s reserve fund, both intended to deliver the full aid before the end of the year.
The groups stress that the limited support would otherwise reduce per-kilogram assistance and could harm fertilisation and yields for the 2027 season. Additionally, they ask the Romanian government to support a EU-wide suspension of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism for fertilizers and to adopt measures limiting further price increases. The request references the steep rise in nitrogen fertilizer costs, which are about 70% higher than the 2024 average.
Why it matters
Insufficient fertilizer aid could lower crop yields and increase food prices in Romania.
