Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu Denies Claims Romania Will Lose EU Veto Right
Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said Romania is not abandoning its EU veto and labeled the rumors as false, accusing AUR of spreading the misinformation. She emphasized that the contested letter does not remove the veto power.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu publicly rejected claims that the country intends to give up its veto power within the European Union, describing the narrative as a total lie and accusing the AUR party of disseminating it. She clarified that the letter at the centre of the controversy only requires a member state to explain its national-interest reasons when opposing a decision, leaving the veto intact. According to Țoiu, modifying EU decision-making mechanisms would need unanimous approval from all member states and cannot happen overnight, particularly for military matters governed by existing treaties.
She noted that no formal proposal to relinquish the veto exists in the Romanian parliament. While speaking at the Council of Foreign Affairs, she urged European leaders to reach consensus before any such change could be considered. Finally, she attacked AUR and other politicians for politicising the issue instead of using Romania’s influence constructively.
