Romanian generals deny combat deployment, cite strategic support role in Ukraine

The Romanian president, Nicușor Dan, submitted a request to Parliament to allow up to 20 Romanian military officers to join the Multinational Force Command that backs Ukraine, a body that rotates its headquarters between France and the United Kingdom. General (ret.) Marius Crăciun, a co-founder of the Special Operations Forces, said the officers will be assigned to command and control structures, handling strategic planning, ongoing operations, security and cyber-defence, and will not be sent to fight Russian forces on Ukrainian soil.

He condemned circulating rumors that Romania is entering the war as a new wave of hybrid misinformation targeting the country. Crăciun also argued that Romania’s participation could raise its international profile, support national interests, and position Romanian firms to profit from the massive reconstruction effort expected after the conflict, with logistics hubs potentially located in Poland and Romania. He called for clearer communication from authorities to avoid public misunderstanding. The parliament is expected to vote on the proposal without major obstacles.
