Romanian Intelligence Service debunks budget and structure rumors on Facebook
The Serviciul Român de Informații used a Facebook post to refute false claims about its budget, leadership and the role of its 19 military units.
After a series of false reports targeted the Serviciul Român de Informații, the agency issued a comprehensive statement on Facebook to set the record straight. The message clarified that the SRI director holds the main credit-authorising role, which can be delegated to deputy directors, and that the 19 mentioned entities are officially recognised military units whose commanders act as secondary credit officers, each with a unique tax registration.
All funding for these units comes from the state budget, is managed through the Treasury, and financial statements are submitted to the Ministry of Finance and made publicly available on the agency’s website for 2026. SRI emphasized that both internal controls and external audits oversee the use of public money. Additionally, the service dismissed unverified reports of troop deployments to Bucharest, fabricated officer networks, telephone fraud attempts and counterfeit TikTok accounts, aiming to curb confusion and reinforce transparency.
Why it matters
