Romanian leu hits new low as euro climbs to record level

The National Bank of Romania reported that the euro reached a fresh all-time high against the leu, surpassing the previous record.

The National Bank of Romania announced that the euro has set a new record exchange rate of 5.3527 lei, overtaking the prior high of 5.3447 lei. The bank attributed this abrupt increase to a combination of domestic political turmoil and the broader governmental crisis, alongside heightened volatility in medium- and long-term sovereign bond yields influenced by the Middle-East conflict. Market data show that after the euro’s peak, the US dollar and gold appreciated, while the British pound and Swiss franc lost ground relative to the leu.

The central bank’s statement highlighted that interbank market rates had been trending upward since August, with a pronounced acceleration in early October. These movements reflect both internal political uncertainty and external geopolitical pressures.

Why it matters

A weaker leu raises import costs and can affect inflation and household purchasing power in Romania.
