Romanian MP Dan Tanasă faces trial for Facebook hate-speech against foreign workers
Deputy Dan Tanasă of AUR has been charged with inciting hatred and discrimination after a Facebook post targeting Asian and African laborers. The case is now before the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against AUR parliamentarian Dan Tanasă for alleged incitement to hatred and discrimination after he posted a message on Facebook urging citizens to refuse services provided by Asian and African workers. Witnesses such as the Cluj branch president of the National Peasants' Party Maniu, Romulus Luca, and ex-policeman Marian Godină reported that the post generated widespread concern and could encourage extremist behavior.
Prosecutors highlighted that Tanasă's statements, made outside the scope of parliamentary voting, fall outside the protection of parliamentary immunity. The indictment cites the post's potential to damage social cohesion and to provoke violence, as illustrated by a subsequent assault on a Bangladeshi worker. The case has been forwarded to the Înalta Curte de Casație și Justiție for trial.
Why it matters
The trial tests limits of parliamentary immunity and addresses hate speech targeting migrant workers in Romania.
